Port Louis the capital of Mauritius is situated on the north western coast of the island backed by rolling mountains. Though Port Louis is a large city it contains a relatively small percentage of the islands population.
The new Caudan Waterfront is a shopping paradise where you will find fine shops, restaurants, cinemas and casinos. For those who wish to haggle and strike up a bargain then visit the Port Louis Market where anything goes. |
A good place to get a feel for city life is the Port Louis Market, with sections devoted to fruits and vegetables, meats and fish, souvenirs, crafts, clothing and spices, be ready to practise some hard bargaining. |

The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens in the village of Pamplemousses, was started in 1735.
These modest but well kept gardens are a highlight of a visit to Mauritius. Though there are few flowers, key attractions in the park are the giant Victoria Regia water lilies, native to the Amazon. One of the worlds largest collection of different palm trees, golden bamboo, chewing gum trees, fish poison trees and a 200-year-old Buddha tree.

The Mauritian Rupee. Any hard currency can be changed at the
airport bank in Mauritius and re-exchanged when leaving Mauritius.
Health:
There is no malaria and it is safe to drink the water.
Language:
The official language is English - but
French is widely spoken,
the local dialect

Creole.
Climate:
Hot summers (November to April) with average coastal temperature of 30°C and
warm winters (May to October), averaging 24°C. Interior temperatures at 5°C
lower. The rainy season is January to May.
Population:
1.200.000 of Indian, African, European and Chinese origin.
Unemployment is less than 8%
Customs Allowance:
500 cigarettes and 1 litre of alcohol.
Clothing:
Casual light weight cotton clothes are standard. Walking shoes
are useful for exploring the island. Some hotels and formal restaurants
require men to wear long trousers in the evening.
